Still Life
My still life paintings combine observation with improvisation. In this series, I explore light, color, and intentionally thick painterly brushstrokes, using composition to create strong, graphic shapes.
Each painting begins with a carefully constructed close up view of a still life. I study the lighting, the placement of objects, this process is deliberate and measured; long shadows are as essential to the composition as the objects themselves. Viewing Wayne Thiebaud as a catalyst for my own practice, an intense focus on compositional balance—and imbalance.
I am not tethered to factual depiction. I push color to create an expressive character and with the glass objects I negotiate transparent and opaque qualities. For me, painting is the act of choosing what matters and eliminating what does not. Too much information dulls perception.
